Reader questions: My taste

This came in from another reader.

My husband recently started giving me oral sex, which is a new experience for both of us. I absolutely love it and he enjoys it except for the taste. He said my arousal fluid is really salty. He is VERY sweet about it but I have a hard time enjoying it if I know he is down there trying not to gag! I did a douche and have it very clean. Is there anything else I can do???

What suggestions do you have for her? Have you ever done anything to improve your “taste” for your husband?

  1. This is all a matter of ph balance and diet. First, do not douche because getting rid of beneficial bacteria and it’s important to have that on your vagina. Next, eliminate excess salt, reduce caffeine, meat, and dairy which all throw off your ph. Next, include a lot more fruit, especially pineapple….can’t say enough about pineapple, apples, cherries, and grapes are great, too. I also eat a lot of active culture yogurt and drink coconut milk. I highly recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. You will understand your vaginal fluids better than you ever have.

  2. I would love answer to this post. I’ve just got married and my hubby says that I taste “green” or broccoli-like down there (oh, the joys of being vegan). I’ve tried eating more fruits than veggies though and that helped a bit. He said it made me taste sweeter.

  3. DH has told me many times that he enjoys my taste. Do we taste different? I assumed we all were alike. Maybe it’s just his preference.

  4. My husband has never commented on my taste, but I find his semen to be very salty, so I understand what you are saying. I have heard that men can make their semen taste better by what they do and don’t eat. Pineapple juice is supposed to be a great flavor enhancer, so perhaps start downing a glass of it every day and see if he notices a difference. I think fruit in general is supposed to be a great flavor enhancer actually. And I think that foods that leave a bad odor on your breath, or gas producing, are culprits of bad fluid taste… onions, garlic, broccoli, cabbage, etc.
I will say this too… relax and don’t worry about it. Enjoy the experience. Your husband will most likely adapt to the flavor. I know I have. I can’t say I love it, but I have come to the place that it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as it used to. Oh, and return the favor if you don’t already. He might be much more able to look past any unpleasantries if he knows his turn is next.

  5. First make sure you are taking a shower boforehand to be sure you are fresh and clean. My other thought, is that whenever I have been salty, it is because I have a yeast infection. Maybe you have a mild infection and don’t even know it. You might want to get checked

  6. All I can say is, what you eat definitely affects your secretions. Who among us has eaten asparagus, then peed a little later – oh! What an eye-opener the first time! For me, eating tomatoes changes the smell of my pee, and drinking coffee definitely does. So, take a look at what you’re eating & see if you can change that a little. But don’t give up your favorite foods! If you both are very new to this, perhaps hubby just needs to get used to it. Maybe a change in technique? He can just concentrate on your “sweet spot” and avoid going lower.

Also, perhaps you aren’t drinking a lot of water? I know that when you’re short on water, it definitely concentrates everything in your urine, so why not “there” as well?

Finally, a healthy body does not really need to douche – you have a self-cleansing system for that.

  7. I try to shower prior to oral sex simply because I know things get more musky as the day goes on. Particularly if I’m being active. He does the same. This can help a lot -especially if the salty taste is just sweat. Douching is horrible – as are any feminine perfumes or scented sprays. They can really mess with your pH which can make things worse. When I shower I just splash water up (no soap on “the pink”) and wash around the sides. I try to drink lots of water and eat healthy which can play a role as well.
